the person who submitted this one wanted to know what i thought about this, so i guess i’ll add my two cents =]
personally, i dont think johanna exactly “hates” katniss. perhaps johanna found her to be annoying since she saw her as too pure and innocent in catching fire. when i think of johanna, i picture a woman who has been hardened by the circumstances of her life. it is written that during her games, she acted weak until most of the competition was wiped out, then she came out a ruthless killer. but i wonder if maybe she really did start out as a weak tribute but learned to kill as the games progressed. later on in the series, johanna says “there’s no one left i love.” it looks like maybe the capitol treated johanna’s loved ones the same way they treated haymitch’s. i believe that these were the circumstances that gave johanna the type of disposition she has in the series.
so when johanna sees a girl like katniss, who maybe was not as affected by the games and the capitol as she was, i think maybe she harbors some anger or jealousy towards her. she sees that instead of losing everything and becoming as traumatized as she was, she becomes not only the most famous female tribute but also the mockingjay, even if katniss herself wasn’t aware of her status at the time. i think johanna feels like she got the shorter end of the stick, as far as victors’ lives post-games go, and feels even more resentment and bitterness because of it.
